God's Gang has a history of providing food to the community thru food pantries. At our height, becoming one of the Greater Chicago Food Depository's pantries of the year. God's Gang ran a food pantry serving more than 3,000 families weekly. In one year, the group gave out 43,000 pounds of food to the public housing community in the Chicago Housing Authority's Robert Taylor Homes As a result of outstanding volunteerism, God's Gang hosted a visit from the, then, Secretary of Agriculture, Dan Glickman.
Taken From The Internet Food Insecurity Stats
20 percent of food-insecure households, 3.5 percent of all U.S. households obtained emergency food from a food pantry at some time during 2004.
The prevalence of food insecurity rose to 11.9 percent in 2004, and the prevalence of food insecurity with hunger rose to 3.9 percent. (Household Food Security in the United States, 2004)
Food Security Needs
Evidence suggests that many individuals go hungry every week. Of the 91,366 people fed by the Chicago Food Depository's network of food pantries every week, 78.8% had incomes below the official federal poverty level during the previous month and 67.7% were African American. Given that overwhelmingly African American communities have large pockets of poverty, the Food Depository's statistics suggest a significant need for programs and services that address the community's food security needs.
